Anne Joris

Sea, ice, earth —
sculpted in paint.

Each canvas is read first with the eyes, then almost with the hands. The paint rises, hollows, catches the light — and the painting changes with the hour of the day.

The gesture
in the paint

Furrows, waves, shards: the reliefs are carved directly into the thick paint. Under raking light, they cast shadows that give the painting its depth.

What a photograph only half reveals, the canvas shows in full.

The edges of my canvases are painted in the dominant tones of each composition. Their deliberately free finish extends the painterly gesture and contributes to the singular character of each work.

The artist

Anne Joris paints texture the way others sculpt it.

Her artistic journey began long ago: some ten years back, she was already creating mirrors adorned with mirror mosaics, playing with shards and light. Today, it is on canvas that this love of relief and light finds its full expression.

Her work explores texture: thick layers worked with the palette knife and other tools, where deep blue, sea green and carmine meet white. One sees waves, seabeds, glaciers — or nothing but light gliding over the relief.

Each work is one of a kind.

A signature all her own

Anne Joris does not follow a plan. Structure and movement emerge under the knife, guided by the inspiration that moves her in the very moment she paints. This is what gives her paintings a language found in no other artist's work.

Step closer, and ask yourself where this precision of gesture comes from — this balance in what nevertheless seems born of the moment. No doubt from a solid academic mastery that no longer shows itself, yet can be read today in every relief.
